DILG 10 CALLS ON CITIZENS TO TAKE ACTIVE ROLE IN FIRE PREVENTION, DISASTER PREPAREDNESS

MANOLO FORTICH, BUKIDNON, Apr. 2 — In a powerful address as the guest of honor and speaker during the Bureau of Fire (BFP) Fire Prevention Month Culmination Program, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) – 10 Regional Director Bruce A. Colao, CESO V, underscored the crucial role of sustained citizen participation in fire prevention, emergency response, and disaster preparedness. RD Colao was received with arrival honors by BFP Regional Director FCSUPT Romel C. Tradio, who later introduced him to the audience.

“We need everyone to be on board with us, as there is an urgent need to institutionalize sustained citizen participation in fire prevention, emergency response, and disaster preparedness,” RD Colao emphasized. “We must raise awareness and instill a mindset that fire safety and disaster resilience are responsibilities shared by everyone.”

The event served as a tribute to the tireless dedication of firefighters, local government units (LGUs), and community fire volunteers who continue to champion fire prevention efforts across the region. RD Colao acknowledged their indispensable contributions, stressing that without their commitment, the BFP would not be able to fully carry out its mandate of protecting lives and property.

During the event, RD Colao also commended the BFP for setting up interactive learning booths, which provided hands-on experiences for attendees, particularly students. These booths showcased various emergency response demonstrations, including rappelling exercises and basic firefighting techniques. “

Highlighting the importance of collaboration, RD Colao called for a united front in promoting fire safety measures. “While the BFP remains committed to its duty, we recognize that our personnel alone are not enough to cover all areas at all times. That is why we need force multipliers—our citizens—who can help by reporting hazards, practicing fire safety in their homes and workplaces, and spreading awareness on fire prevention measures,” he added.

This year’s Fire Prevention Month theme, “Sa Pag-iwas sa Sunog, Hindi Ka Nag-iisa,” reinforces the message that fire safety is a shared responsibility. The DILG expressed confidence that with the active involvement of communities, the BFP will continue striving for excellence in preventing and suppressing fires, investigating fire causes, conducting rescue operations, and ensuring public safety.
