DAGYAW 2024 SPARKS DIALOGUE ON THE UNCERTAIN FUTURE OF AI
In a world where smartphones can recognize faces and chatbots can write poetry, the line between science fiction and reality continues to blur. It was against this backdrop that the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Budget and Management (DBM), and Philippine Information Agency (PIA) turned the sixth cycle of Dagyaw 2024 into a dynamic forum on the promising yet unpredictable future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the society.
Themed “Spilling the T.E.A: Trends and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence,” this year’s Dagyaw brings forth an escape to reality, a fresh perspective where AI revolutionizes the way we think, live, and interact.
Invited guests were Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)-10 Engineer James Kevin Sagocsoc, ECT, MTRM, and Department of Education -10 Dr. Renel Jay Quirit, CESE. Reactors from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines Ralph Vincent Arienza and Tabang Sikad Incorporated Policy and Advocacy Head Gwyneth Pardilla also gave invaluable insights to their discussions.
Approximately 800 participants were present, encompassing students, government officials, and mall passers-by. Marked by its impressive turnout, the meeting provided a platform for discussing the potential and risks of AI.
Knowledge is power: why it matters
DILG Regional Director Wilhelm M. Suyko, CESO IV, opened the event by affirming how AI has woven itself into the very fabric of our society.
“Together, we’ll navigate the trends shaping AI’s future and the ethical considerations guiding its development and deployment. Our discussions today will illuminate cutting-edge advancements and emphasize the importance of ethical frameworks in harnessing AI’s potential for the greater good,” he said.
Among these discussions was Engr. Sagocsoc highlighting the importance of being knowledgeable about the influence and functions of AI. With its ongoing advancements, it is vital to be aware of machine learning, to better equip users and empower the workforce while upscaling the skills of the Filipinos.
Additionally, Sagocsoc addressed the concerns, issues, and misconceptions of AI. He further explained that AI will not be able to replace humans or jobs. However, someone who is able to utilize AI will. Reactor Pardilla agreed to this and saw the need to invest in it while knowing its limitations. “Importante kaayo siya for our economy in manufacturing and providing services, and AI is one of the factors equipping our nation,” she stated.
Despite this fear of being replaced by robots, Sagocsoc warns citizens of a bigger issue at hand – people’s dependence on it.
The Duality of AI and Man
Meanwhile, Dr. Quirit highlights his discussion on the dual edge of AI in terms of driving innovation and upholding ethical standards. He mentioned how it’s incorporated into people’s daily life such as listening to music on Spotify or even shopping online where advertisements would pop up on different platforms in line with their interests.
Moreover, he mentioned that people should adapt to the improving global innovation and discussed how AI is also able to counterattack fraudulence through fraud detection and cybersecurity. “So, what should we do? Why don’t we drive the innovation? Let’s prepare ourselves in an environment where what we will be dealing are machines.”
Despite the rise of AI innovations, Dr. Quirrit, however, explained its threats. According to 2014 statistics, a staggering 5M data breaches in the US by cyber criminals, and 80 percent of phishing attacks are effects of AI innovations, further urging the school administrations, teachers, students, and politicians to be responsible users of AI. Reactor Arienza agreed by stating the need to be vigilant users, hindering one from being victims of the dark side of AI.
One click can make a difference
DILG 10 Assistant Regional Director Yvette Tolentino-Sunga, CESO V, encouraged everyone to be more open to conversations and dialogues on AI. She magnified how one click can make a difference, and the urgency to be well-aware of the advancement of technology.
“AI has become engrossed in our daily lives, and instead of fearing it, we must challenge ourselves to keep up with the latest trends and to be part of a process of change. A single click can make a difference, and together, we can shape the future,” she said.
As the community advances with new learnings and productivity tools, the Dagyaw 2024 Townhall Meeting served as a testament to the transformative potential of engaged ideas, reflection, and unity, prioritizing the well-being of its members and its quest for building a better future. The event not only offers guidance but inspires the way towards a progressive, brighter, and inclusive future for Northern Mindanao.
