In support to the National Disaster Resilience Month observance, DILG 10 as the Vice Chairperson for Disaster Preparedness highlights the roles of the local government units, especially in the barangay level in times of disaster.

During the Talakayan sa PIA held yesterday at SM Downtown, Cagayan de Oro City, DILG- Local Government Capability Development Division (LGCDD) Chief Hazel O. Occeña said that the Department has lined up several disaster preparedness-related training activities for LGUs.

“Under the Barangay Newly Elected Officials Orientation, we will include a topic on disaster preparedness, including the formulation of their barangay DRRM [Disaster Risk Reduction and Management] Plan. We will also be conducting Contingency Workshop for several LGUs that really needs to update their contingency plan for any disaster event,” she said.

Further, Occeña shared that the Department will be conducting a workshop on Local Climate Change Action Plan (LCCAP) which will focus not only on the adaptation measures but also on the mitigation of climate change. This will include looking into reducing green house gas emissions in the localities.

“We will also be conducting CPDRM [Community Based Disaster Risk Management] for several barangays by selecting flood-prone barangays in order to educate them as to what to do in times of disaster,” she added.

Along with the said activities, DILG 10 will continue to monitor LGUs to ensure that they are prepared for any disaster events, noting that this is also an important component in the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG).

Talakayan sa PIA also involved representatives from the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council in Northern Mindanao, composed of Office of Civil Defense (OCD), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
